A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as pardoning festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the onset of a current administration.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The event, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The animal, provided by a first responder, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to kick off the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: vibrant, varied, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Annually, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
