Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in shaping sculptural silhouettes established him as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as a number of outfits for her American tour after assuming the title.

After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
