Cameron Norrie secured the most important victory of his career by coming back from a set down to defeat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

Although he had earlier beaten Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this triumph signifies Norrie's initial success over a current world No 1.

"Enormous. So big for me," commented Norrie, who joins as the fifth UK male player in the record books to overcome a world No 1. "Returning from injury last year, I lost in the first round of qualies here. I just sought to embrace my performance in the second half of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the biggest success of my professional life, my first win over the world No 1 and likely the strongest competitor in the world right now."

Norrie, seeded 31st globally, also halted Alcaraz's dominant sequence of nine straight final appearances and 17 successive Masters 1000 wins, which was the top run of performances in the Spanish star's developing professional path.

Contest Overview

The top seed seemed to be moving confidently to success at the start as he sailed through the first set. Yet, Norrie steadily worked himself back into the game by executing with improved accuracy and engaging the Spaniard into prolonged, physical points. His relentless consistency and reliability gradually left its mark.

For much of the match, Alcaraz delivered strong serves but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm off his groundstrokes. The rising talent appeared particularly struggling executing his signature shot, which has been the most effective stroke in the sport for most of this season, haemorrhaging 29 forehand miscues and a total of 54 errors. Opposing him, Norrie offered his opponent minimal unforced errors, keeping up his reliability, fitness and power throughout while delivering effective serves and choosing his moments to advance inside the baseline and attack well.

Professional Context

Following dealing for an extended period due to a serious left forearm injury and challenges with his game, Norrie dropped as low as 91st globally this season. After making the advanced stages at Wimbledon and the Roland Garros second week since then, this victory further underlines the 30-year-old's improvement as he seeks to return to the elite rankings and even higher. Alcaraz, in spite of his incredible accomplishments, is has not yet figure out how to produce his top form on indoor courts.
