European Union Finance Leaders Gather to Debate Unlocking €140 Billion in Frozen Russian Funds for Ukraine Support
EU economic leaders are meeting in Brussels this Thursday to address the bloc's economic priorities, featuring the pressing issue of financial support to the Ukrainian government.
Ukraine's President Warns Country's Existence Relies on Allies
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared in a latest discussion that Ukraine's existence depended on receiving more funds from allies.
“I hope, with luck, they will approve this decision,” he told reporters. If not, “It will be necessary to seek an alternative, it concerns our survival. That’s why it is essential very much. And I count on our allies.”
European Authorities Pushes for €140bn Reparations Loan
The European Commission still hopes to convince member states – including Belgium, that is currently blocking the plan amid juridical concerns – to move ahead on a €140 billion reparations loan using Moscow's immobilized funds.
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen insisted today that it would be “the optimal method to support Ukraine’s defence and its economy.”
Decision Delayed Till Year-End Summit
A final decision on the matter has been deferred till the EU leaders’s summit in the last month, as the financial support required at the start of the coming year.
Talks Coincide with Corruption Scandal in Kyiv
But these discussions are happening during a difficult time for Ukraine, as Zelenskyy was forced to contain rising popular anger in the country regarding a bribery incident in the energy sector, firing several officials allegedly involved in participating in a large-scale corruption network.
Danish economic affairs minister Stephanie Lose was questioned on her reaction to the scandal, and affirmed that there was determination to keep aiding the Ukrainian people.
“Naturally, The country will have to persistently focus with improvements, strengthening every sector of the nation [and] including anti-corruption … but it is clear that Europe stands firmly behind Ukraine,” she said.

In other news, analysts will be monitoring the Netherlands where the parliament convenes to discuss potential ways ahead in the coalition talks, Rome-Tirana discussions in the Italian capital offering the latest chance to witness the brilliant Meloni-Rama dynamics, and a series of top-tier conferences throughout the continent, including Nato’s Mark Rutte’s visit to a military installation in Germany.
