No major competition promotes equal footing like the NFL: it defines their identity. However, after the first ten matchups in this campaign, this isn’t a league that is equally balanced among elite teams, poor performers, and average squads. Rather, we see a situation where the bulk of franchises are merely sufficient.

NFC Standings Definition

Looking at the NFC side, to some degree, we see clearer definition. The Rams and Seahawks (each holding 7-2 records) appear to be the most well-rounded squads in the NFL, and secured blowout wins on Sunday. Philadelphia at 6-2 notwithstanding their difficulties continue to possess a deeply skilled squad across the NFL, similar to Green Bay (5-2-1 record). Detroit as well (six and three), with their fluctuating form on offense and defense and navigating coaching drama, have demonstrated they can hammer good teams. For each of these squads, it's straightforward to envision a Super Bowl path.

AFC Confusion

Turning to the American Football Conference, the playoff picture is thoroughly confusing. The four teams leading their divisions through ten weeks: the Colts, Patriots, Broncos (each with 8-2 records) along with Pittsburgh (5-4). Read that again. Not the Chiefs. Buffalo is missing. Indianapolis Colts

Now they’re youthful, quick and confident. However, we must acknowledge how soft the Patriots’ schedule has been. They have faced the least challenging lineup throughout football, and there have still been cracks. The signal-caller has been brought down thirty-five times – the second-most in football – and some of the shots he absorbed on Sunday appeared dangerous. Over time, that punishment compounds.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos are eight wins similarly, and it still feels as if they’re holding their breath. The Denver signal-caller has shown inconsistency, with the attack struggling, as the defense handles all the heavy lifting. Lacking competent QB performance, Denver cannot intimidate playoff opponents. The Chargers are also contending in the Western division at 7-2, yet medical problems along their offensive line will present challenges for extended playoff success.

Pittsburgh Steelers

And then there’s Pittsburgh, somehow still leading the AFC North notwithstanding receiving 25-10 by the Chargers on Sunday night. Their scoring margin remains negative, their defense too often disappears, and Aaron Rodgers’ limitations at this stage of his career persistently appear. They maintain a 5-4 record while surviving, however, the Ravens, featuring a recovered Jackson and facing easier opponents, are riding a three-game streak. This development isn't entirely shocking that the Ravens have pulled within a game of the Steelers, though the speed of this shift highlights deficiencies within the Steelers' uneven performances. That the Ravens started with a 1-5 record and still look like capable of division victory is telling about the complete conference.

Historical Favorites

Baltimore constitutes part within a trio of powerhouses – alongside the Bills and Chiefs – driven by elite quarterback play, who would still strike the highest anxiety in opposing teams should they reach postseason. They're the teams everyone hopes to avoid, yet Kansas City and Buffalo cannot get out of their own way.

Bills Struggles

Previously, Buffalo was celebrating post Chiefs triumph. This weekend they encountered a particularly discouraging setback during the campaign. They didn't merely fall versus the Dolphins; they looked terrible, falling 30-13 on the road. It was Miami’s first win against Buffalo in several seasons.
