New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue during his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central policy, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly following his victory in November.

"The choice came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of directing my full attention on carrying out the platform on affordability voters elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its vibrant immigrant populations and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the best of New York City," he expressed.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, the community will continue to reside within me and my work," he said.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

But his rivals, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he is from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it should be a venue for public city functions, and advocated for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his modest Astoria apartment.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, which means the city imposes caps on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the cost of housing outpaces the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
