As I walk into the room, Lamine Camara grabs a football he clings to throughout our chat. This serves as a simple symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and natural ability won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest approval to secure was not a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his path in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

However, the famed academy – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Year and Continental Arrival

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to the title and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to temper his aggression, after being sent off early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals

At Monaco, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”

Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the game.
