The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.

This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
